AI D&D Character Generator

Write your character's backstory and Dungeon Dreamer turns it into a filled-in D&D 5e character sheet: class, species, background, ability scores, skills, features, spells and equipment, ready to download as a PDF. It works with the 2014 rules and with the 2024 rules.

What the character generator makes

The result is a complete fifth-edition character sheet, not a list of ideas. Every sheet has the parts you need to play the character in your next session:

  • name, species (race on the 2014 sheet), class, subclass, background and level
  • the six ability scores with their modifiers, saving throws and skills
  • armor class, hit points, hit dice, initiative and speed
  • weapons and attacks, class features, species traits and feats
  • spellcasting ability, spell save DC, spell slots and spells for characters who cast them
  • equipment, coins, languages, alignment, and the character's backstory and personality

How it works

  1. Write the backstory. Type it, dictate it, or import a .txt, .pdf, .docx or .md file. A few sentences are enough, and up to 10,000 characters are accepted. No idea yet? The dice button gives you a random backstory to start from.
  2. Choose the rules and the sheet. Pick the 2014 or the 2024 rules, and the 2014 or the 2024 sheet layout. Both start on 2024.
  3. Generate. The AI reads the story, works out a class, species, background and ability scores that fit it, and fills in the rest of the sheet by the rules you chose.
  4. Download and play. The sheet is saved in your Library. Download it as a PDF to print it, or keep editing the fillable form in a PDF reader.

2014 or 2024 rules?

Dungeon Dreamer supports both versions of the fifth-edition rules, so the sheet matches the rules your table plays with.

  • 2014 rules are the original fifth edition. The character has a race, the race gives the ability score increases, and the sheet uses the 2014 layout.
  • 2024 rules are the revised fifth edition. The character has a species, the background gives the ability score increases and an origin feat, and weapon mastery is part of the class features. The 2024 sheet has its own layout.

If your group still plays the original rules, choose 2014. If it has moved to the revised rules, choose 2024. You can also put a character built by one set of rules on the other sheet layout.

An example

A backstory like this one:

Eldrin grew up among the halflings of a quiet river valley, copying old books for the village sage. When raiders burned the library, he swore an oath to the old powers of the forest to protect what was left. He fights with the longsword his grandfather left him and talks to animals more easily than to people.

can give a sheet like the one in the picture: a halfling paladin with the Sage background who took the Oath of the Ancients, with Lay on Hands, paladin spellcasting, weapon mastery with the longsword and the oath spells Ensnaring Strike and Speak with Animals. Every generation is written anew, so the same backstory can give a different character the next time.

Questions

Is the character generator free?

Creating an account is free, and your first character generation is free. When you run out, a free roll once a week adds more. A subscription adds more generations and AI portraits for your characters. Free generations may require a verified e-mail address.

Which D&D rules does it use?

The fifth edition, with either the 2014 rules or the 2024 rules. You choose the rules and the sheet layout before you generate; both start on 2024.

Can I download the character sheet as a PDF?

Yes. You can download every character sheet as a PDF, right after it is generated and later from your Library. The PDF is a fillable form, so you can keep editing it in a PDF reader.

Do I have to write a long backstory?

No. A few sentences about who the character is and what they want are enough. A longer backstory, up to 10,000 characters, gives the AI more to build on.

Can I choose the class or species myself?

Write them into the backstory, for example "a dwarf cleric who left her temple". The AI builds the character around what the story says.
