AI D&D Location Generator

Describe a place and get a ready-to-run location for your campaign: a name, a description to read out, who lives there, what it is known for, its peculiarities, hazards and resources, how it sounds, feels and looks, and an illustration.

Create your location
Three glass globes holding a snowy castle, a jungle and a volcano
Snowy castles, jungles, volcanoes: any place you can describe.

What the location generator makes

A location sheet you can run without more preparation, for a single room, a whole town or anything in between. Every location has:

  • a name and a description you can read out to the players
  • who lives there, and who has heard of the place
  • what it is known for and what is strange about it
  • passive effects that act on everyone who stays there
  • hazards for the party to survive and resources for it to use
  • the ambient sounds, the temperature, the light and the size of the place
  • an illustration of the location

How it works

  1. Describe the place. The kind of place, where it is, who is there and the mood you want. Type the description, dictate it, or import it from a file. The dice button suggests a random place if you need a start.
  2. Generate. The AI writes the location sheet from your description and draws an illustration of the place.
  3. Use it at the table. The location is saved in your Library next to your characters and monsters.

Works in any 5e campaign

Locations are not tied to a rules edition. The same location sheet fits a campaign that plays the 2014 rules and one that plays the 2024 rules, and you can drop it into a published adventure or your own world.

An example

A description like this one:

A ruined observatory on a mountain peak above the clouds, taken over by a cult that worships a falling star. The air is thin, the nights are freezing, and the great telescope still works.

gives you a location sheet with a name for the observatory, a description to read out when the party arrives, the cult and whatever else lives among the ruins, what the place is known for in the valleys below, hazards such as the thin air and the cold, resources the party can use, the sounds, light and temperature of the peak, and an illustration of the observatory. The details are new each time you generate.

Ideas to start from

  • a tavern where every guest hides a secret
  • a sunken temple that only rises at low tide
  • a border fort that has not received orders in years
  • a market that only opens at midnight

Questions

Is the location generator free?

Creating an account is free, and your first location generation is free. When you run out, a free roll once a week can add more. A subscription adds more generations. Free generations may require a verified e-mail address.

Which rules edition is it for?

Locations are not tied to a rules edition, so the same location works in a 2014 and in a 2024 campaign.

Does every location get an illustration?

Yes. The generator draws an illustration of each location it writes.

What should I put in the description?

The kind of place, where it is, who is there and the mood you want. A sentence or two is enough; more detail gives the AI more to work with.

Is it only for dungeons?

No. Describe any place your party can visit: a city, a tavern, a forest shrine, a ship or a whole valley.
