What the monster generator makes

A stat block in the familiar fifth-edition format, ready to run at the table, whether you need a boss for the finale or a strange creature for a random encounter. Every stat block has:

  • a name, the size, type and alignment, and a description of how the monster looks and behaves
  • armor class, hit points and speed
  • the six ability scores with their modifiers
  • saving throws, skills, senses and languages
  • a challenge rating with its experience points
  • traits, actions and legendary actions
  • a portrait of the monster

How it works

  1. Describe the monster. What it is, where it lives, how it fights and how dangerous it should be. Type the description, dictate it, or import it from a file. The dice button suggests a random monster if you need a start.
  2. Generate. The AI writes the stat block by the fifth-edition rules and draws a portrait of the creature.
  3. Run it. The monster is saved in your Library, and you can download the stat block as a PDF to print or to keep next to your notes.

Rules version

Monsters are written with the 2014 fifth-edition rules and laid out as a 2014 stat block, with the challenge rating and the proficiency bonus that goes with it.

An example

A description like this one:

A huge bear-like fiend with burnt-orange fur and black horns that lives among the desert dunes. It shapes sandstone like a sculptor and is calm unless provoked, but when threatened it becomes a whirlwind of claws. A boss for a party of level 10 to 12.

can give a stat block like the one in the picture: the Bearfolk Fiend, a huge fiend with armor class 17, 195 hit points and challenge 12. It can burrow, senses through the earth, its multiattack strikes up to two creatures at once, its Infernal Roar deafens, and its legendary actions raise a sandstorm around it.

Tips for better monsters

  • Say how strong it should be: a challenge rating, or the level and size of the party it will face.
  • Say how it fights: up close, at range, with spells, alone or with minions.
  • Give it a home and a goal. They shape its traits, its senses and the languages it speaks.
  • Name a weakness if you want the players to find one.

Questions

Is the monster generator free?

Creating an account is free, and your first monster generation is free. When you run out, a free roll once a week can add more. A subscription adds more generations. Free generations may require a verified e-mail address.

Which D&D rules does it use?

The fifth-edition rules of 2014, with the 2014 stat block layout.

Does every monster get a portrait?

Yes. The generator draws a portrait for each monster and puts it on the stat block.

Can I download the stat block?

Yes, as a PDF, right after it is generated and later from your Library.

Can I decide how strong the monster is?

Say it in the description: the challenge rating you want, or the level and size of the party it should face. The AI takes the description into account when it sets the numbers.
